The Howard College Lady Hawks fell to the McLennan Highlanders 72–56 Tuesday in the first round of the NJCAA Region V Basketball Tournament in Odessa.
Howard battled throughout the first half, but McLennan was able to barely create separation heading into the break, taking a 26-23 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Highlanders continued to build on their advantage while the Lady Hawks worked to cut into the deficit. Despite continued effort from the red and black, McLennan maintained control and secured the 72–56 victory.
"We didn't shoot the ball well yesterday. Give credit to McLennan their length on our guards made us take tough shots. I am very happy with our season. I told the team afterwards keep your heads up we have twelve freshman & one sophomore. We made the tournament as a 2nd seed and made Howard Women's Basketball irrelevant to other teams in the conference. We will be back stronger next year, and this experience will help us moving forward," stated Head Coach Al Davis.
Makayla Ellison led the offensive effort for the Lady Hawks, totaling 25 points on the evening while adding 10 rebounds.
Aubre Pox also contributed 11 points for Howard, helping lead the scoring for the red and black.
With the loss, the Lady Hawks wrapped up a memorable season after earning a spot in the Region V Tournament and competing in a strong conference field.
