The Lady Hawks jump to 6-1 in conference play and 17-6 overall after an 80-77 win over the Lady Chaps Monday night.
"Last night win at Midland was huge for our program moving forward. The last time we won at Midland was 2019. Our team played hard for 40 minutes. We were down most of the game, but we kept fighting and at the end we made some key defensive plays and big shots! Very happy with how we finished first round of conference play", stated Head Women's Basketball Coach Al Davis.
In the opening stanza both teams put up 19 points. The second frame saw the home team jump in front with a four-point lead to move into halftime. The third quarter saw the Lady Hawks out up another 22 points while the Lady Chaps added 23. The final frame was the lowest scoring quarter for both teams, with the red and black holding the home team to a mere 6-point total in the last stanza, leaving the Lady Hawks victorious with an 80-77 final.
Makayla Ellison had 24 points and seven rebounds to lead the Lady Hawks. Ellison finished 8-17 from the field, -9 from the three and 5-6 from the line. The forward for the red and black also had two assists and one steal.
Agathe Lerat had her highest scoring game this season with 16 points, going 7-13 from the field with three assists, two rebounds and one steal.
Abrianna Lawrence was another big contributor for the Lady Hawks with 12 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
The win over the Lady Chaps places the Lady Hawks in second in the league behind Clarendon, the only team undefeated team remaining the WJCAC Women's Basketball.
"We will have to keep getting better second round of conference play starting this Thursday at Frank Phillips. They are a good team, and this is a game we need to win to continue to separate ourselves in the conference standings", commented Davis.
Next up for Howard College Women's Basketball is a trip to Frank Phillips Thursday for a 5:45 p.m. matchup.
