Howard College Women's Basketball claimed their first win of the new year with a 98-81 final over Frank Phillips to open conference action at home.
In the opening stanza, the visitors totaled 30 points to the Hawks 23. Howard College came back with a bang in the second quarter, tallying 22 points compared to Frank Phillips' 13, giving the red and black a 45-43 lead. A big time 3-pointer from Kailyn Berry with one second left on the clock sent the Hawks into halftime with a crucial lead that the Howard College maintained the duration of the game.
The third quarter was the highest scoring segment for the Hawks with 29 points. In the fourth quarter, the red and black tacked on another 24 points, totaling a 98-81 final over the visitors.
Collectively, the Lady Hawks finished 45.9% from the field, 31.3% from the three and 83.3% from the charity stripe.
Makayla Ellison led the scoring efforts for the Lady Hawks, totaling 26 points on the evening, going 9-17 from the field and 7-8 from the line. Ellison also tallied seven assists, four steals and one blocked shot.
Abrianna Lawrence was another driving force for the Lady Hawks at 6-11 from the field, 4-9 from the three and a perfect 4-4 at the line. Lawrence totaled 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Berry was another key contributor for the red and black with 21 total points at 9-20 from the field and 2-2 from the line. Berry led the team in rebounds with seven and added another blocked shot for the Lady Hawks.
