Lady Hawks First Half Review
Lady Hawks Basketball: A Midseason Report and a Look Ahead
As the Howard College Lady Hawks basketball team reaches the halfway point of the season, they find themselves with an even 8-8 record. Competing in the highly competitive Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC), the Lady Hawks have started conference play at 0-2 but remain optimistic as they head into the second half of their schedule.
Home-Court Advantage at the Coliseum
The Lady Hawks have shown strength on their home court, posting a 3-2 record at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum in Big Spring. The team clearly thrives in front of their home crowd, where nearly every performance metric improves compared to their road games. Offensively, the Lady Hawks are averaging an impressive 71.44 points per game and nearly 40 rebounds per game. Their ball movement has been stellar, leading to more assists per game than their opponents, while their defense is forcing turnovers at a remarkable rate of 16 to 20 per game. They've also doubled their opponents in steals with an impressive 2:1 ratio, showcasing their tenacity on both ends of the court.
Individual Standouts
The Lady Hawks' balanced roster features four players averaging double-digit scoring. Guard Mackenzie Heeke leads the team offensively, putting up over 11 points per game. Forward Emma Rose has been a model of efficiency, shooting a scorching 66% from the field, while Alysa Connely has been automatic from the free-throw line, maintaining a perfect 100% on the season.
On the boards, freshman Kailyn Berry leads the charge, pulling down over six rebounds per game, helping the team stay competitive in the paint. Meanwhile, defensive standout Jah'Mareah Linville has been a force to be reckoned with, leading the team with an incredible 3.1 steals per game.
A Tough Road Ahead
The Lady Hawks know the challenges ahead are daunting. Every remaining game on the schedule is against WJCAC opponents, a conference widely regarded as one of the toughest in Texas. South Plains College and Clarendon College currently sit atop the standings with dominant records, South Plains at 14-1 and Clarendon at 16-2.
Howard will face these top-tier opponents in the coming weeks, starting with a key home game against South Plains on January 20th. The Lady Hawks will look to capitalize on their home-court advantage and lean on their balanced scoring, defensive prowess, and the support of the Big Spring faithful.
The Path to Success
Though the road to the postseason won't be easy, the Lady Hawks have the tools and talent to rise to the challenge. With their ability to force turnovers, dominate at home, and rely on a deep roster of contributors, they are well-positioned to make a statement in the WJCAC.
As the season progresses, fans can expect thrilling matchups and a relentless effort from the Lady Hawks as they battle through one of the fiercest conferences in the state.
