Hawks Return Home to Community Welcome After Capturing NJCAA National Title
The Howard County community came together Sunday evening to celebrate the Howard Hawks men’s basketball team following their historic NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship victory, welcoming the team home in unforgettable fashion. The celebration started miles before the Howard Hawks ever reached campus.
Escorted by local law enforcement from the county line, the newly crowned NJCAA Division I National Champions made their return to Big Spring on Sunday evening, greeted by a wave of support that stretched down Birdwell Lane. Fans lined both sides of the road, many holding signs and wearing Howard colors, as the Hawks rolled back into town.
By the time the team arrived at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, the atmosphere had only grown louder.
Inside, the crowd gathered to officially welcome home a team that etched its name into program history.
Head Coach Kyle Cooper addressed the crowd, emphasizing the resilience and togetherness that defined the Hawks’ season. Howard College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks followed, highlighting the pride the team has brought to the college and the impact of their success not only as athletes but also as young men.
Several players also took the microphone, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support they felt throughout the year and during their championship run. Their message was consistent - the title belonged as much to Big Spring as it did to the team.
Following the remarks, fans were invited to join the team on the coliseum floor. Players spread out to sign t-shirts, pose for pictures, and connect with fans of all ages. From the county line escort to the final autograph signed, Sunday night was more than just a celebration, it was a reflection of a community rallying around a team and a program that made them so proud.
