Howard College Basketball set to open conference play at home on Jan. 5
After a great pre-conference run, both Howard College Men and Women’s Basketball are set to make their conference debut at home as the host against Frank Phillips Monday, January 5th.
Men’s Basketball
Prior to the start of conference play, the Hawks are hot with a 13-1 record, earning all 13 wins consecutively. In the most recent NJCAA D1 Top 25 Poll, Howard College Men’s Basketball was ranked 8th in the nation.
At the conclusion of pre-conference play, the Hawks are tied with New Mexico Junior College for second in the league.
On the men’s side, the red and black have claimed two WJCAC Player of the Week awards, with Terry Copeland receiving POTW honors twice so far this season, (11/18) and (12/7).
Copeland leads the Hawks in scoring, averaging 19.4 points per game shooting 65.2% from the field. Dace Pleasant sits a 36.8% from the three to lead the red and black. Copeland is the leading rebounder for the Hawks averaging 7.5 rebounds per game. Returner for Howard College Daniel Culberson averages 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game as another statistical leader for the red and black.
Women’s Basketball
The Lady Hawks are 11-5 heading into conference play after a four-game win streak closed out the 2025 portion of the schedule.
This season, the Lady Hawks have also earned two WJCAC Player of the Week honors with Makayla Ellison taking the first award of the season (11/27) and Kailyn Berry claiming the honor most recently for the Hawks (12/12).
Ellison, Berry and Abrianna Lawrence represent the red and black amongst the points per game leaderboard with Ellison third in the league (17.7), Berry in eighth (15.6) and Lawrence in ninth (15.1). The trio continues to keep Howard in the rebounds per game conversation with Berry fourth in the league (8.7), Ellison in fifth (7.9) and Lawrence in seventh (7.6). Ellison, Berry and Lawrence remain amongst the top players in the league in field goal percentage as well as percentage from the three. Ellison is in seventh for FG% at 47.8% and Berry is in ninth at 46.4%. Ellison sits in third from the three at 41.3% with Lawrence in fourth at 40.5% and Berry in ninth at 36.2%.
The Lady Hawks sit in the top half of the league in percentage from the three (fourth place, 31.7), free throw percentage (third place, 71.8), assists per game (fourth place, 15.6), steals per game (fourth place, 8.9) and points per game (third place, 83.1).
