Hawk Rodeo Garners WJCAC Honors
BIG SPRING – As a newly sanctioned sport within the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC), excellence in rodeo is now being recognized at the local level and the Hawks brought home top honors for the Women’s Team as well as coach of the year.
The women’s team is the conference champion while Hawk barrel racers Kaci Smith and Mecca Hickock were tabbed as 1st team and honorable mention respectively.
Not to be left out, head rodeo coach Greg Kernick was selected as the WJCAC Coach of the Year for the women’s rodeo division.
For the men’s team, steer wrestler KC Fryer received a nod for honorable mention for his season of strong performances.
“These kids have worked hard all year long and deserve the recognition they are receiving,” said head coach Greg Kernick. “Kaci and KC were both just seconds away from an appearance at the 2012 college national finals, and they have been top performers in their events all season long.”
This is the first time the WJCAC has recognized rodeo as a conference sport after aunanimous decision was made last spring to take steps to include it. The rodeo events are still conducted under the rules and guidelines of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) but now the WJCAC can dole out specific honors for the local athletes and honor them in a bigger, better way.
“It’s great to get this kind of recognition at the local level now,” said Kernick. “And it’s even better to see the conference step up and reward these athletes for their dedication to their sport.”
