Martinez to Take Over for Hawk Baseball

BIG SPRING –Howard College administration didn’t have to look far when replacing the Hawks head baseball coach when they selected Rob Martinez to fill the job.

With the recent resignation of Britt Smith, officials have selected Martinez who had previously been serving as the assistant coach under Smith.

“I’m very thankful to Dr. Sparks, Terry Hansen, and the board members for this opportunity,” said Martinez. “I’m very excited to continue the tradition that coach Smith has built here at Howard College.”

‘Once a Hawk, Always a Hawk,’ rings true for Martinez as he played as a Hawk from 2003-2004 and garnered 1st team All American status during his tenure here. He graduated from Howard College in 2004 then headed to the University of West Alabama to continue his baseball career and obtain his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.

“We are excited for Rob to take over the helm and continue the great Hawk tradition,” added Dr. Cheryl T. Sparks, president. “We know that he has the knowledge, skills, and dedication to continue building our baseball program and lead them to success.”

Martinez comes to Big Spring from his hometown of El Paso where he has also served in various baseball-coaching roles at both the high school and college level.

“This is my dream job after playing here. Being able to coach here means the world to me,” said Martinez. “I look forward to giving this college and community a lot to cheer about over the next few years. I want everyone to continue to be proud of our program.”

Smith’s vacancy also left an opening for the athletic director role for the college but officials have not made any finals decisions on how that will be replaced at this time.
